The new biography of Basquiat by Eric Fretz, a contributor to this site, was made available to buy at the end of March, 2010. It can now be ordered through Amazon and many other on-line providers and bookshops. Libraries can order the book directly from the publishers, or from most jobbers.

The book is published as part of the Greenwood biographies series, suitable for high school and college use. It is a biography of the artist based on a critical respect for his art. More information on the book is available on this website, or from the publishers
  • The book is Eric Fretz, Jean-Michel Basquiat: A Biography, Greenwood Press, 2010.
There are several other books on Basquiat out this year:
  • The new Basquiat retrospective to open in Europe later in 2010 will have a catalog (Burchhart, Dieter. Jean-Michel Basquiat, Fondation Beyeler, Hatje Cantz, May 2010). I have not been able to see it yet, but will review it here when it is released.
  • Jennifer Clement's The Widow Basquiat, long out of print, has recently been reissued in a revised edition Shearsman Books, January 2010. The book is a poetical look at the relationship between Suzanne Mallouk and Jean-Michel Basquiat, providing intimate glimpses into the artist.
  • The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (MOCA) this week announced the publication of a children’s book about contemporary art, Breaking the Rules: What is Contemporary Art?  Is was written by Susan Goldman Rubin for ages 8-12, and among the many artists in the MOCA collection featured is Jean-Michel Basquiat. The work cleverly takes the rule-breaking aspect of contemporary art to make it appealing to young people.
