Basquiat, Recent Works at Auction

This page is a regularly updated listing of Basquiat works at auction, with most recent first. Visiting the previews for upcoming auctions is a way to see many infrequently exhibited originals by the artist.

Records of well over 200 works at past auctions are listed below, from 2008 to 2012. With most of the works listed below, you can click on the title to see an image of the work on-line. (Details given here are mostly adapted from those given by the auction houses involved, no endorsement of the work's authenticity is implied from this website).

I have not included the posthumous screen prints which often show up at auction -- the prints Ernok, Untitled (Head), Per Capita, Rinso, Cabeza, Charles the First, Jawbone of an Ass, and Rome Pays Off -- because these are not really works by Basquiat, but prints made by the Basquiat Estate after the artist's death and based on earlier Basquiat paintings.

Further technical details on Basquiat artist's prints can be found at the Basquiat Registry.

[NOTE, 2012: The Sotheby's / Teamsters dispute has been settled. For almost one year this site had been urging solidarity with the pickets of locked out union art handlers at Sotheby's auction house, including boycott of Sotheby's auctions. However, the pickets and boycott are now canceled, as the Teamsters Local 814 (representing the professional art handlers, many artists themselves), and the hugely successful multi-billion dollar Sotheby's house have reached agreement, and the workers will finally resume their jobs.]
