This page is a regularly updated listing of Basquiat works at auction, with most recent first. Visiting the previews for upcoming auctions is a way to see many infrequently exhibited originals by the artist. Records of over 200 works at past auctions are kept, back to 2008. With most of the works listed below, you can click on the title to see an image of the work on-line.
[NOTE: I have not included the posthumous screen prints which often show up at auction -- the prints Untitled (Head), Rinso, Rome Pays Off, Ernok, Cabeza, Per Capita, Charles the First, and Jawbone of an Ass -- because these are not really works by Basquiat, but prints by the Estate made after Basquiat’s paintings.] [NOTE 2011: Details are for information only, for people who want to view the works, and do not imply commercial endorsement of the auction houses. Sotheby's in particular is a nasty union-busting auction house, and this website supports the boycott of that firm.
On August 1st,
in the midst of contract negotiations, Sotheby’s suddenly locked out of their
jobs 43 professional art handlers, all members of Teamsters Local 814. Sotheby’s
has just had its most profitable year ever in its 267 years (raising $1.17 billion from contemporary art alone in 2011), and its CEO, Bill
Ruprecht, is paid approximately $60,000 a day. Yet Sotheby's had demanded the art
handlers give up their 401K plan and work a reduced 36-hour week, effectively a
10 percent wage cut. The company also wants to cap workers’ overtime, eliminate
certain titles that pay more, and, in initial bargaining, wanted workers to
give up their right to sue over charges of discrimination.
The workers, their
union, and supporters are picketing, but Sotheby’s continues to operate
using scabs and a non-union subcontractor. Occupy Wall Street has been assisting the union by disrupting certain sales, video here and here. For more information see http://www.sothebysbadforart.com/content/
